Jashen Joel Govindsamy, know artistically as Jashmir, is a South African music producer and DJ. He is best known for his 2020 singles “Amaiphone” and “Ma Se Kind”, both garnering millions of views on TikTok and earning him the 031 award.

Raised in the city of Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Jashmir was influenced by his South Indian heritage as well as his upbringing. His interest in music began when he accompanied his grandfather, a DJ, to weddings and other Indian functions and served as a DJ for these events.

In June 2020, Jashmir released “Amaiphone”, an amapiano remix sampling the famous “iPhone Ringtone” from Apple. The song went viral on TikTok and became Jashmir’s debut major label single. The track peaked at number 13 on the South African iTunes main chart on the week of July 11, 2020. Artists such as Yvng Swag and SJ Bleau praised the song for its fusion of South African sounds. The official release has received over 20 million views on TikTok.

The same year, Jashmir released “Ma Se Kind”, which also went viral on TikTok. He later released a version with added vocals by Prett Kadet, and extended his verse to a full original song in English and Afrikaans. The new song, entitled “Awe My Ma Se Kind”, was released as his second single in December 2020.

When Jashmir was in school, he would always offer to DJ for school events which helped him build his local fanbase and got himself a lot of support from peers. In 2020, Jashmir was a DJ on East Coast Radio and a frequent guest on 5FM which helped him grow his brand and also showcase his DJ skills to the nation.

Jashmir received the national Producer Of The Year award by City Awards in July 2020 and was also in the top 5 for the TikTok song of the year award.
